Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Dr. Michael R. Piazza earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Scranton in 1979. Dr. Piazza went on to earn his Medical Degree from the Milton S. Hershey Medical School of Penn State University in Hershey, Pennsylvania in 1983. He completed his Orthopedic Residency program at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia in 1988, and furthered his medical training with an additional year of study in the prestigious Spine Fellowship Program at Pennsylvania Hospital — Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals.

Dr. Piazza and his family moved to Clearwater in 1989 where he established himself as the area’s first Fellowship-trained Orthopaedic Spine surgeon. In 1990, Dr. Piazza joined Dr. George Morris and formed the practice that today is Orthopaedic Specialties of Tampa Bay, P.A. The practice has since grown to include seven orthopaedic surgeons with two office locations.
Dr. Piazza has served as chairman of the Spine Section of Morton Plant Hospital. He has been involved with extensive research in disorders of the spine, has published several articles relating to orthopaedics and spine surgery, and has served on several administrative committees for Morton F. Plant Hospital. He is a member of the American Medical Association, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Florida Medical Association, Pinellas County Medical Society and Florida Orthopaedic Society.

Dr. Piazza’s expertise in orthopedics has enabled him to become involved in multiple clinical research studies. He has been actively involved in enrolling clinical research patients in both pharmacologic and device related spine research studies. Dr. Piazza has had the honor of being selected for inclusion in the Best Doctors in America® program on multiple occasions. Dr. Piazza is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Although Dr. Piazza specializes in treatment of disorders of the spine, he also treats all types of orthopedic problems.
